How The Creative Brain Works: Two Perspectives

I read an interesting article in the May 2017 issue of National Geographic about how the brain works regarding creativity. As a people, we’ve tried to understand creativity for years. Can’t see it, can’t touch it, but it – whatever “it” is – is definitely there.

Nat Geo reports another scientific attempt to understand the creative process.

Researchers managed to record brain waves in an MRI while jazz musicians played music that was memorized and then music that was improvised. They learned that for the improv, the brain activity was “fundamentally different” and that it appeared the brain was able to turn off its own ability to criticize itself.

I find this fascinating because, I’ve learned the same thing from leading a creative life, and share as much in my new teen filmmaking book (“Write! Shoot! Edit!”) coming out this July. I believe it’s important to understand the creative process so you can better harness your creativity.

Though it appears the researchers break the creative process into two types of activities (in this case playing improv vs playing memorized music), through my experience, I believe the creative process breaks down into three stages:

(1) wild invention (the improv, free-creative activity)

(2) structural edit (a big picture activity where you work with historical conventions)

(3) nit-picky edit (a fine-tuning activity where details and consistency matters)

Each one of these stages needs its time at centre stage, its time of focus, so if it’s a writing project, you’ll have to write the project at least three times to focus your brain’s perspective for each draft.

I’d love to see an MRI scan of differing brain activity for each of these three phases of the creative process, as I believe each one taps into a different skills in the brain… but I guess we’ll have to wait for science to explore that idea someday.

For those living the creative life, what’s your perspective on the activity happening in your brain while you’re creating?

All the best of creativity to you,
Deb

Inspiration at the Movies: Moana

“Is there something you want to hear?”
– Gramma Tala (Moana, 2016)

I love Gramma’s question. It reminds me of the essential role that the student plays in the learning process. The teacher may share information, but if the learner is not ready to receive, tha tinfo won’t be received and learned. Not only do we need the right teachers, we need them at the right time… and when that teacher comes into our life (whether in the school classroom or somewhere else in our lives), we need to open ourselves up to the teaching.

Such wise words. Thanks, Gramma.

Cheers & a fabulous learning journey to you,
Deb

FILM: The Red Eye Movie

n-flyI love watching inflight movies on planes. Remember when flights played only one movie and you either watched it or you didn’t? I still loved movies on planes then. All of them. It’s a problematic love, however, when you take red-eye flight.

For one particular red-eye flight, I was completely exhausted by the time I was boarding. I collapsed into the plane seat needing sleep. Really badly. Not only that, no one was in the two seats beside me, so if I allowed myself, I could lay down for a good snooze. Tempting… but I’d miss the inflight movie.

With trepidation, I looked up the movie selection of the flight. For which movie would I have to fight to stay awake? I wasn’t sure I could do it this night.

Then I saw the title.

I smiled.

It was the sequel to the only movie I’d ever walked out on at the movie theatre. Yay!

I stuffed the flight magazine back into the seat pocket and lay down.

Cheers & best wishes sleeping on planes to you,
Deb

INK: Table-Cloth Plotting

In honour of the completion of my thesis novel, I have to tell you about my table cloth.

“Really?” you may ask.

“Really,” I say. It’s an awesome table cloth: red with yellow stripes in its pattern. It’s my Plotting Table Cloth.

tbclthWhen it comes to planning out a story, writers use all kinds of tools from scriptwriting software to journal books to index cards. Yes, I pull out scraps of paper, pencil, index cards, and most importantly, my Plotting Table Cloth.

The yellow stripes are spaced in such a way that there end up being four divisions on the dining table: Act 1, First part of Act 2, Second part of Act 2, and Act 3.

Step 1 – using scraps of paper, I scribble story bits or character bits on a small scrap and place it about where in the story’s timeline I think I’ll want to reveal the information or play out the event. I’m not restricted to A-Z planning, and face it, the creative brain rarely thinks a story completely in order.

Step 2 – as the many scraps of paper populate the table, I gather than transfer the information to index cards – each card representing a scene. Because the table will be covered in paper scraps, again, I’m not restricted to building scenes in start-to-finish order. I can jump in an hone any part of the story I want.

Step 3 – Now I look at the story in order, and bring my analytical brain into action to evaluate and better the entire shape of the story, its characters and events.

… and it all started with a table cloth.

How do you approach story building?

Cheers & happy plotting to you,
Deb
