Inspiration at the Movies: Atlantis – The Lost Empire

eye“Trust me on this one. You don’t wanna know. Audrey, don’t tell him. You shouldn’t have told me, but you did. And now I’m tellin’ you… you don’t wanna know.”

– Dr. Sweet (Atlantis: The Lost Empire, 2001)

Sweet’s words are appropriate, too, for movies. Ever seen a scene in a movie you wish you could “un-see”? Once it’s been seen, it’s now in our heads and we carry it forever. Sure we can try to forget it, or repress it, but once seen, we’ll never truly be rid of it. We work in a very powerful medium. Let’s make it and watch it wisely.

Cheers and a good shoot to you,
Deb

Magic Movie Moment: North of Superior

kite1 + 1 = 3.

North of Superior is an IMAX movie from the beginning of IMAX. This magic moment was made in the editing room (as many magic movie moments are):

Outside on a breezy day. An abandoned lot serves as a park. Children have handmade kites from empty bread bags and sticks. So much laughter, so much joy, as they run around. You can’t help but smile, remember the carefree times of your own past. Resonating.

Cut.

The front of a well-cared for church. Mostly adults, well-dressed. Gathering, greeting. Filing into the building. Smiles all around, though more reserved behaviour. So much more grown up.

No narrator needs to tell us the story between these two shots. One cut and we know it. They are no longer only two separate shots showing us a glimpse of life north of Lake Superior; they are so much more. They show us who we are… as we were and as we are now. How, too, we have “grown up”. What did we trade in our own path to growing up?

Don’t forget the bread-bag, kite-flying you inside you. He or she is still there.

Cheers & a good shoot to you,
Deb

Spotlight Awards Inspiration

I was at the Spotlight Awards for Women in Film and TV last night. A unique award show where you pretty much know who’s going to win in each category before you show up… so really you’re attending to hear the acceptance speeches. The speeches were so genuine and from the heart. Some spontaneous, some came with notes. Naturally, everyone had various words of wisdom to share from each of their exceptional career paths, but I’d say there was one message that came through most of all… truly inspiring to us all… so here it is:

Inspiration at the Movies: Evan Almighty

candles“If someone prays for patience, you think God gives them patience? Or does he give them the opportunity to be patient? If he prayed for courage, does God give him courage, or does he give him opportunities to be courageous?”
– God (Evan Almighty, 2007)

As the new year is about to begin, ’tis time for more inspiration to move us forward… and in “Evan Almighty” God indeeds puts us straight about the hardships in our lives. They are not obstacles and stumbling blocks, but instead are opportunities for growth! Yes, we’ve heard that type of sentiment often before, but this quotation I think puts “opportunity” into perspective so we can actually turn hardships around into a positive light – and therefore also see a way through. I mean, we have already asked for these “opportunities” so the quotation suggests.

Each of us travels a different path in life and each of us has different lessons to learn. God in “Evan Almighty” calls on us not to see the challenges of our lives as insurmountable – as punishment inflicted on us – but to celebrate them as the opportunities that we have deeply wished for (which they are), and to grow through them. That is indeed a hopeful state of being.

What opportunities are you going to wish for and discover in your life in 2013? Best wishes with success and joy in the journey!

Cheers and a great new year to you!

Peace and Goodness for the Season

Pick up a newspaper and you’ll see there’s a lot of bad news in the world every day. No wonder we enjoy jokes on the callsheet. So how about some good news?

holdsun

Happynews.com has news bites broken down into many categories, including “Arts & Entertainment“.

Dailygood.org has both news and articles (I especially like the article: “Why Creative Thinking is Inclusive Thinking“).

You can even drop by these sites and be inspired enough to share some of the good news and good feelings on the callsheet (in addition to or instead of the traditional callsheet joke). If you do, remember to credit the source of your info; it’s good practice, and others may want to seek out more peace and goodness themselves.

So, may you have a wonder-filled holiday season and new year and may you also find peace in quiet moments.

Cheers and good shoot to you,
Deb
