Spotlight Awards Inspiration

I was at the Spotlight Awards for Women in Film and TV last night. A unique award show where you pretty much know who’s going to win in each category before you show up… so really you’re attending to hear the acceptance speeches. The speeches were so genuine and from the heart. Some spontaneous, some came with notes. Naturally, everyone had various words of wisdom to share from each of their exceptional career paths, but I’d say there was one message that came through most of all… truly inspiring to us all… so here it is:

Inspiration at the Movies: Evan Almighty

candles“If someone prays for patience, you think God gives them patience? Or does he give them the opportunity to be patient? If he prayed for courage, does God give him courage, or does he give him opportunities to be courageous?”
– God (Evan Almighty, 2007)

As the new year is about to begin, ’tis time for more inspiration to move us forward… and in “Evan Almighty” God indeeds puts us straight about the hardships in our lives. They are not obstacles and stumbling blocks, but instead are opportunities for growth! Yes, we’ve heard that type of sentiment often before, but this quotation I think puts “opportunity” into perspective so we can actually turn hardships around into a positive light – and therefore also see a way through. I mean, we have already asked for these “opportunities” so the quotation suggests.

Each of us travels a different path in life and each of us has different lessons to learn. God in “Evan Almighty” calls on us not to see the challenges of our lives as insurmountable – as punishment inflicted on us – but to celebrate them as the opportunities that we have deeply wished for (which they are), and to grow through them. That is indeed a hopeful state of being.

What opportunities are you going to wish for and discover in your life in 2013? Best wishes with success and joy in the journey!

Cheers and a great new year to you!

Peace and Goodness for the Season

Pick up a newspaper and you’ll see there’s a lot of bad news in the world every day. No wonder we enjoy jokes on the callsheet. So how about some good news?

Happynews.com has news bites broken down into many categories, including “Arts & Entertainment“.

Dailygood.org has both news and articles (I especially like the article: “Why Creative Thinking is Inclusive Thinking“).

You can even drop by these sites and be inspired enough to share some of the good news and good feelings on the callsheet (in addition to or instead of the traditional callsheet joke). If you do, remember to credit the source of your info; it’s good practice, and others may want to seek out more peace and goodness themselves.

So, may you have a wonder-filled holiday season and new year and may you also find peace in quiet moments.

Cheers and good shoot to you,

Movies To See Again: The Boy Who Walked Backwards

Not all films have wide release. There are some truly special, unique treasures found at film festivals that you may never have the chance to see again. You’ve shared the moment with a relatively few number of people in various screening rooms around the world. A shared, temporal experience… and some of those films will have long lasting, penetrating memories.

I wish I could see The Boy Who Walked Backwards again. In such a short duration, the film effectively and memorably addresses the hurt that people can’t visually see when missing someone who has died, and the unplanned leadership position that can be thrust onto anyone at any time due to life events. A tough subject approached with such charm and compassion that I still remember images in my mind today, many years later… for how the boy learns to face his loss is something we need to do in life over and over again for the many losses and changes in our own lives.

If you ever get the chance, watch the film and you’ll understand too.

In the meantime, have a great festival season!

Cheers & memorable movies to you,
Deb

Inspiration at the Movies: The Count of Monte Cristo

“You call it 50 degrees… I say two points more north by north east.”
– Edmond Dantes (The Count of Monte Cristo, 1975)

Perspectives! How true that two people can look at the same thing and see it differently depending from where each of us have journeyed in life. Our personal histories and experiences colour the lenses through which we see the world. They affect how we interpret movies, art, stories, conversations, relationships… and on and on. No one perspective is right. No one perspective is wrong. Just different.

In a communication medium such a film, we cannot therefore presume that the message we send out will be received exactly as intended… there are so many perspectives at play on the receiving end! Acknowledging alternative points of view can raise our awareness of the richness of other possibilities and augment our ability to communicate. ‘Tis a valuable skill in this communication art.

So… recognize and enjoy that we are each on a unique journey through this life, and… vive la difference!

Cheers & a good shoot to you,
Deb
